Barstool Oyster Stories - tales from the Oyster Bar - 1.0

StarWars Day MayThe4th - 2012 - LightSaberBattle @TheCeiliCottage

May 3rd 2012 - I’m Driving home, listening to news on radio - “May the 4th Be with you” will be celebrated in Toronto for the second time this Saturday….”

I literally had to pull over as my though process took over, to think this through.

“I’m calling a LightSaber Battle at CeiliCottage. I’ll make a quick Tweet and post this out…must tell crew”

For context, the year prior, I was in NYC with my family on the same weekend and, in Washington Square, we stumbled upon a “flash mob Lightsaber battle” - the oddest, most fantastic sight. To see 100’s of Cosplay StarWas themed costumed characters, with fully lit lightsabers bashing each other (gently) at 10pm - Only in NYC you say… ShuckIt! I’m calling a Battle at the Ceili Patio!

I made the Tweet and posted, told the crew what we will do, and with their eyes rolling, I ran off to the Store to get a few LightSabers - just in case no-one showed up - I had to play the role. #KidInaCandystore

Just another day at the OysterBar, great weather and full patio and bar - and a few winks and flashes of StarWars gear - On Cat nodded and pointed at the Rebellion symbol on his jacket shoulder, Like “shhh - we got your back”

The Hockey was on and I’m OTK - On the knife. I happen to to answer the phone in the afternoon and @shaunahunt from @cityTV was on the line…

“So, you’re holding a LightSaberBattle at CeiliCottage? - Fantastic!! We want to come and cover the event! How many people are coming!?”

Laughing on the line…”HaHaHa…COOOOL Huh - YES and Light Sabre battle! 10 pm…How many people? I have NO IDEA - I posted that yesterday!”

“Well, how do you know if any one will show for a battle?”

“I don’t - but Hey - YOU called Me - so the word got out there - the Twitter-thing eh?  No Worries I have a back up plan, and will have a show for you whenever you get here!” I had no idea what to do…

-Do, or Do not - There is no Try (Yoda…like you didn’t know that…)

Luckily, later that evening Zane Caplansky (#CaplanSkywalker maybe…) popped in for a few Oysters and a pint…now I had my plan.

Zane! - You up for a LightSaber Battle when CityTv gets here? “Absolutely” - Battle On!

Around 10pm  the familiar CityVan pulls up and out pops #PrincessShauna (hair did-up like Leia) all ready to witness…something.

We assembled Shauna, the cameraman and Zane at the end of the bar.

Ok, says I, This is what’ll happen…

I’ll be shucking at my station, call out Zane at the bar - and challenge to a Battle.

Up, on the bar, across to the end, through the dining room, out to the patio, and Zane will kill me on the sidewalk. Cool? Can you shoot that?

Action! - as planned (not well planned) - we got up on the bar and “fenced”…Patrons played in, moving their pints, while we battled past…and went back to the game, with out getting up from their seats….nice!

Out, through the Cottage room, into the patio - I’m now huffing an puffing - Zane got to kill me right in front of Leia(Shauna) “Well…you don’t see that everyday” they wrapped, and hopped back in the van.

Probably not the StarWars Day Battle she was hoping for, but a Battle nonetheless!

#24HourEvent planning…

Just a few hours later - 11pm news time - I switched on CityTV at the bar - and this popped up…

Master plan completed. (Link)

The Walrus & The Carpenter

The Walrus and the Carpenter

LEWIS CARROLL

The sun was shining on the sea,

 Shining with all his might:

He did his very best to make

The billows smooth and bright

And this was odd, because it was

The middle of the night.

The moon was shining sulkily,

Because she thought the sun

Had got no business to be there

After the day was done

"It's very rude of him," she said,

"To come and spoil the fun."

The sea was wet as wet could be,

The sands were dry as dry.

You could not see a cloud, because

No cloud was in the sky:

No birds were flying overhead —

There were no birds to fly.

The Walrus and the Carpenter

Were walking close at hand;

They wept like anything to see

Such quantities of sand:

If this were only cleared away,'

They said, it would be grand!'

If seven maids with seven mops

Swept it for half a year,

Do you suppose,' the Walrus said,

That they could get it clear?'

I doubt it,' said the Carpenter,

 And shed a bitter tear.

O Oysters, come and walk with us!'

The Walrus did beseech.

A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk,

Along the briny beach:

We cannot do with more than four,

To give a hand to each.'

The eldest Oyster looked at him,

But never a word he said:

The eldest Oyster winked his eye,

And shook his heavy head —

Meaning to say he did not choose

To leave the oyster-bed.

But four young Oysters hurried up,

All eager for the treat:

Their coats were brushed, their faces washed,

Their shoes were clean and neat —

And this was odd, because, you know,

They hadn't any feet.

Four other Oysters followed them,

And yet another four;

And thick and fast they came at last,

And more, and more, and more —

All hopping through the frothy waves,

And scrambling to the shore.

The Walrus and the Carpenter

Walked on a mile or so,

And then they rested on a rock

Conveniently low:

And all the little Oysters stood

And waited in a row.

The time has come,' the Walrus said,

To talk of many things:

Of shoes — and ships — and sealing-wax —

Of cabbages — and kings —

And why the sea is boiling hot —

And whether pigs have wings.'

But wait a bit,' the Oysters cried,

Before we have our chat;

For some of us are out of breath,

And all of us are fat!'

No hurry!' said the Carpenter.

They thanked him much for that.

A loaf of bread,' the Walrus said,

Is what we chiefly need:

Pepper and vinegar besides

Are very good indeed —

Now if you're ready, Oysters dear,

We can begin to feed.'

But not on us!' the Oysters cried,

Turning a little blue.

After such kindness, that would be

A dismal thing to do!'

The night is fine,' the Walrus said.

Do you admire the view?

It was so kind of you to come!

And you are very nice!'

The Carpenter said nothing but

Cut us another slice:

I wish you were not quite so deaf —

I've had to ask you twice!'

It seems a shame,' the Walrus said,

To play them such a trick,

After we've brought them out so far,

And made them trot so quick!'

The Carpenter said nothing but

The butter's spread too thick!'

I weep for you,' the Walrus said:

I deeply sympathize.'

With sobs and tears he sorted out

Those of the largest size,

Holding his pocket-handkerchief

Before his streaming eyes.

O Oysters,' said the Carpenter,

You've had a pleasant run!

Shall we be trotting home again?'

But answer came there none —

And this was scarcely odd, because

They'd eaten every one."
